I would like to extend to you and your child the warmest welcome into Title 1!  My name is Angie Merboth and this is my fourth year as the Title Director for Serena CUSD 2.  I have five years of experience in classroom teaching.  I spent four years as a Kindergarten Special Education inclusion teacher during which I implemented differentiated instruction and interventions to support individual learning styles and abilities.  Prior to that I taught sixth through eighth grade Reading/Language Arts and had experience in a variety of grade levels through substitute teaching over a six year period.  I live in Utica with my husband and two boys (13 and 16).  I value forming and maintaining relationships and feel it is important to share with you my focus. I am really looking forward to working with you and your child this year!

As a result of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), recently restructured as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Serena CUSD 2 offers a Title 1 improvement program to give extra help to students who are having difficulties in the areas of Literacy and Mathematics, based on benchmark assessments and teacher recommendation.  Title 1 services provide supplementary academic support in addition to the core curriculum being taught in the regular classroom.  The mission of our Title 1 program is to enable all children to meet high academic standards, to promote active family involvement in your child’s education, to increase the expertise of staff through professional development opportunities, and to instill in students a life-long love of learning.  This is a great opportunity to help your child become successful in school.

As a parent of two children, I recognize that parents are the first teachers to their children.  An important part of our Title 1 efforts involve parental involvement and support.  I invite you to share your thoughts and ideas for the Title 1 program.  I look forward to meeting you during the Title 1 Open House/Parent Meeting.  You can also show support by reading to your child, helping with homework, and volunteering at school.  Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, or suggestions for improving our program.  You can reach me during regular school hours (815-792-5109) or by email (amerboth@unit2.net).  If you would like to talk in person, I am always available to schedule appointments before and after school. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to meet and speak with each of you as we embark on your child’s educational journey together.

Yours Truly,

Angie Merboth
