A Note From Your Principal

September 29, 2019

Some water samples taken from Harding Grade School have Lead levels above the EPA action level of 15 parts per billion (ppb), or 0.015 milligrams of lead per liter of water (mg/L).  Under Federal law, we are required to have a program in place to minimize lead in your drinking water by November 2019.

This program includes:

  1. Corrosion control treatment (treating the water to make it less likely that lead will dissolve into the water);
  2. Source water treatment (removing any lead that is in the water at the time it leaves our treatment facility); and
  3. A public education program.

What steps have we taken:

On September 27, 2018, the hall fountain tested high for Lead at 0.0296 mg/L. Upon notification of the Lead action level exceedance, the hall fountain was removed from service and replaced. Additional entry point and distribution water quality samples (WQS), and source water samples were collected in September of 2019 in accordance with federal regulations; with a primary focus on locations that are likely to be used for human consumption by drinking or food preparation. While preliminary results showed the hall fountain is safe for drinking, additional sites tested with Lead levels above the EPA action level from additional site samples on September 25, 2019. The gym fountain was immediately removed from service and faucets in additional locations throughout the building, although not likely to be used for human consumption by drinking or food preparation, are being replaced as a precautionary measure.  Culligan bottled water dispensers have been installed and are readily available for use. Once all faucets have been replaced, additional samples will be collected and tested.  Student safety is our primary concern. We will continue to work with TEST, Inc. and the Illinois Department of Public Health to ensure this is resolved.

If you have any questions about how we are carrying out the requirements of the Lead regulation please give Harding Grade School a call at 815-792-8216.

The attached brochure and poster also explain the simple steps you can take to protect yourself by reducing your exposure to lead in drinking water.
