Great Job Huskers!

Mrs. Dierzen's 8th grade students are learning about the settling of the West, part of that which involved learning about the importance of the Transcontinental Railroad. Through class discussions and readings, Mrs. Dierzen explained to students how towns popped up along the railroad due to government subsidies and land grants. Mrs. Dierzen discussed the destruction of the American Bison along the Union Pacific Railroad and the Chinese laborers of the Central Pacific Railroad. Following discussions and readings, students worked as teams to re-create their portion of the railroad using the knowledge from class readings and discussion. When students put the pieces of the railroad together, they saw that one class had the exact width of the railroad the same, and another class did not. This allowed for a discussion of the standard gauge width of the railroad making travel and shipping quicker, easier and cheaper. Great work 8th graders!
